This is a recap on our previous post regarding DRY CYLINDERS. The terrible wind and rain has been causing a lot of problems. If you are having trouble with your key not going into the cylinder smoothly just give a quick squirt of WD40 into the key way.

This is a photo of a bespoke door grille we recently installed for a customer. It is a large diamond mesh design and includes a cut out for an existing cat flap in this back door. The grille is protecting both the glass panel and the vulnerable lower plywood panel. The grille is finished in white powder coating so no maintenance is required. Fixing can be face fix (as this example) or reveal fixed, hinged and even removable.

A customer called out a locksmith with the problem of a Broken Key In Lock. The following day that customer called us asking if we would go and have a look. They told us that the “locksmith” they called said he couldn’t do the job because it was an electric lock, he left site having unnecessarily sold them a new cylinder complete with 6 keys which he left behind. When I arrived on site I was horrified to find the lock completely dismantled and left in a pile on the floor behind the door! It was a pile of all the parts belonging to an electric Assa Abloy lock, live wires were hanging out of the door, the building had been left unsecured. This would have been a simple job for a professional locksmith who would know how to unscrew the cylinder, extract the piece of broken key and then screw it back into the lock, no new cylinder required! I re-assembled the lock back on the door, most importantly left the property secure and one extremely happy customer. What should have been a quick, standard priced job ended up being much more expensive.

Slamming door to get it to lock? One of the causes could be because the lock bolt needs lubricating. Metal on metal friction prevents the latch from passing smoothly into the lock keep (strike). It is so easy to remedy this particular problem. A quick spray of WD-40 (if you haven’t got any a bit of butter will do) on the bolt will cure it. You wont believe the number of times I get called out for this. The customer has been slamming the door for so long that the frame fixings have loosened and sometimes the bolt is bent. The main entrance door to a block of flats I visited recently was just being left open due to this problem and resulted in one of the flats being burgled.
A small can of WD-40 is a must in all store cupboards/garages/toolboxes.
