The Master Locksmiths Association director of business development Steffan George recommends securing your home and buying contents insurance wherever you live.

Secure Your Home With Locks and Alarm Systems

The clocks have gone back, burglars take advantage of long dark nights. Time to make sure you secure your home with your locks and alarm systems before you go out.

Householders are being warned to beware of a spike in home burglaries as the clocks go back.  Co-operative Insurance said that the number of home and motor insurance claims usually shoots up after British summer time ends. Having analysed data since 2013, the insurer has found that home theft claims surge by about 38 per cent in the five months after the clocks go back, compared to claims during the five preceding months.

Give yourself time, it doesn’t take much to check that all your windows and doors are properly locked, set your alarm if you have one before you leave home.

One of the best tips is take time to make sure that you don’t leave any keys in door locks, these are visible to burglars who check for this and can see them through other windows.

Look after yourselves, BURGLARIES ARE NO LONGER A POLICE PRIORITY – see our post dated 28 July 2015.

Burglaries No Longer A Police Priority

This morning I watched some of Victoria Derbyshire’s news programme on the BBC.  She had a studio interview with Sara Thornton, Chair of the National Police Chiefs Council, about the changes to policing that we must expect.  It is upsetting news for victims of burglary as it will not be investigated with any urgency.  Cases of burglary will not be a priority to attend as quickly as they have been in the past and ‘they may attend to collect evidence’, does that mean that they may not attend at all?  Good news for the burglars, bad news for victims – you’re on your own!
